The history of the Three Chimneys starts with the construction of the first power station in Sant Adrià de Besòs in 1912. Since then, three more stations have been constructed, successively replacing one another as advanced technologies and improved labour conditions are pursued. While they only accounted for 1% of the workforce at the Three Chimneys, women are a key part of this history. It was women from the surrounding neighbourhoods who lobbied against the second station because it emitted toxic pollution. Their fight led to the construction of the third station, where we stand now. Later, the next generation of local women decried the soot that spewed from the Three Chimneys and covered their homes, obliging its managers to increase the chimneys’ height by 20 metres.
The history of the Three Chimneys is indicative of how women strike not only for their personal rights and fair wages, but to improve everyone’s living conditions. At the heart of this industrial ruin, Claire Fontaine – a feminist, conceptual collective artist based in Sicily, which illuminates the need for new artistic concepts in an increasingly multipolar world – wills us to follow women’s lead and fight for the right to a better world.
