CHOI+SHINE Architects’ Urchins pay homage to their titular subject’s spectacular patterned shells while honouring Barcelona’s textile and fishing heritage. The work is made with hand-crocheted fishing rope stretched over steel frames. Its design references those of different lace gathered from across Europe, including pieces from Catalan archives. The work was made in La Mina by 120 local residents who demonstrated patience, tenacity and teamwork over an extended period. Lace has traditionally been associated with women, and Urchins likewise embodies women’s ongoing struggles for equality and respect. While the tradition of lacework is elevated to art, the craft as intangible heritage transcends generations. Presented at the Three Chimneys, Urchins is a nod to the Besòs residents’ protests against the pollution of their neighbourhoods, the black rain from the chimneys soiling everything in its surroundings. Finally, Urchins represents the possibility of the sea and its inhabitants reclaiming the industrial relic.
