The Escola Vil·la Joana was founded by the Barcelona City Council in 1921. Located on the Collserola mountain, it was the city's first public school exclusively for deaf and blind students. Inspired by progressive teaching methods like Montessori and Waldorf, and further influenced by the forest schools movement, it did pioneering research in innovative teaching, which emphasised outdoor education. For generations of students, Vil·la Joana was their first socialisation space. To this day, it remains a significant centre for education for students with various forms of mental disorders.
As part of the pre-biennial research process, Diversorium – a crip and queer temporary gathering space for all bodies created by Antonio Centeno, María Oliver and Veronica Valentini – explored the history of Vil·la Joana from a critical perspective. Together with the artist and educator Jaume Ferrete, Diversorium organised a series of meetings during which intellectually diverse participants analysed the systems that label and isolate children who do not fit into ‘normal’ educational standards, questioning the notion and systems of inclusiveness. After conducting their research, Diversorium invited the artist Ariadna Guiteras to create such a welcoming and restful space, inspired by the text and research that Diversorium did of Vil·la Joana. The space that she then made draws on feminist science fiction, which is known for its use of organic, adaptive, and embracing elements, and the particular architecture of the current Vil·la Joana school. Throughout the biennial, the space will host performances, gatherings and educational activities.
