Escola de Passats [the School of the Past] consists of an archive of historical experiences, aesthetic and political in nature, situated in metropolitan Barcelona and arranged through six key historical passages – from the colonial origins of industrial capitalism to the current eco-social crisis (1820-2024). In the face of a history of the city and region understood as an accumulation of progress, beauty and Modernity, it is worth asking about the costs and limits of such accumulation, as well as the barriers – of class, gender, race, origin, visibility and voice – that explain how historical and present-day Barcelona works. In this presentation, the past is summoned as a democratic laboratory, compiled into an archive of utopian imaginations, from which to project desirable collective futures. On this occasion, a solidary and experimental constellation of texts, images and artifacts is brought together, where other forms of common life and other histories of the city and region shine, capable of inheriting the work of subaltern, countercultural or simply forgotten collectives, communities and worlds. Aesthetics of protests here include different types of artistic and documentary materials, as well as newly commissioned work by Fernando Sanchez Castillo, in the intersection between critical interrogation and historical utopia. They not only allow us to understand participatory forms of resistance to capital, the authoritarian state and fascism, but also to reconstruct moments and places where the radical democratization of knowledge, rights and resources – such as work, energy, desire or political imagination – was possible.
