Batec (Heartbeat) was a teachers’ collective that was active in the province of Lleida in Catalonia from 1930 to 1936. The collective functioned as a decentralised support network of and for educators working in rural areas. In dialogue with one another, the Batec members explored and experimented with the Freinet pedagogical method, which emphasises the importance of students expressing themselves freely, especially through the publication and distribution of school magazines. Massa Salvatge and Lluc Mayol conducted research about the collective’s publishing practice and its female members who were persecuted or forced into exile during the Spanish Civil War and throughout Franco’s dictatorship.
On the basis of their research, Massa Salvatge and Lluc Mayol then realised the collaborative project Batecs d’una premsa menuda, for which they developed a printing press that they then lent to various schools in the Vallès area. Their aim was to introduce a disruptive element into the educational environment, an element that offers an alternative to the prevailing demand for instantaneous communication. The use of this new old tool functioned to connect all the students participating in the project and create a mutual support network among the teaching staff, reinforcing the idea of the educational community while recovering the Batec spirit. The entire process, spanning nearly four months, was documented in an audiovisual work.
