Lara Schnitger’s practice often focuses on female labour and representation, celebrating unsung heroines from diverse cultures and socioeconomic histories. Together with Erika Sprey, Schnitger participated in the Manifesta 15 pre-biennial research process, during which she studied Barcelona’s metropolitan region through an eco-feminist lens with an intent to understand how grassroots interventions could contribute to the healing of traumatised landscapes. Schnitger was particularly interested in metropolitan Barcelona’s history as the world’s second largest production centre for textiles, as evidenced by the hundreds of smokestacks that dot the region. The artist views these smokestacks as decontextualised monuments to the textile industry that created the wealth of Catalonia. After receiving a commission from Manifesta 15 to further develop her pre-biennial work on a trans-cluster scale, she created a decentralised installation in collaboration with Xarxa de Dones Cosidores, a women’s sewing association. The installation consists of narrative banners that finally give a loud voice to the women of metropolitan Barcelona, whom have been kept quiet. The banners are strung like skirts around several smokestacks across the region. Noting that the seamstresses themselves decided which phrases to proclaim following a series of workshops, the installation builds upon the stories (personal and collective) of local women and their communities, intertwining them with the work of the textile industry – dyeing, bleaching, spinning, steaming. Dressed in their ‘skirts’, the smokestacks appear as loud and proud queens, symbolising resilience, sxsterhood (all-inclusive) and strength while imagining an eco-feminist future.
